GHANA

Life around the West African Football Academy

The WAFA, West African Football Academy, is located in the village of Sogakope, Ghana. Boys are being educated to become professional soccer players. From there major soccer teams in Europe will scout them. They have to prove themselves repeatedly to keep their place in the team.

To join the WAFA, the boys are scouted during little soccer competitions in the villages of Ghana. There is a great contrast between where they come from and where they are educated. Most of the boys will not be living near their families and their lives revolve around soccer. Luxury changes are also involved. For example, cooks provide three meals a day.

The changes in their lives are drastic and this is something many people do not know. To bring this to the attention of society I have visited the villages where the soccer players originally come from. I captured the contrast between their lives now and their lives before the WAFA.
