ERICEIRA

The City of Surf

The coastline of at least 850 kilometres, in combination with the waves that are always present, make Portugal a very interesting country for the surf culture. In the beginning of the seventies, the first surfers came to Portugal and ever since you can find surfers everywhere along that coastline. In 2011, in the city of Ericeira, the world's first surf reserve was established in order to protect this surfing area. The surf reserve protects the surf waves and the nature around it so future generations can enjoy surfing.

Over the past five years, the old fishing village of Ericeira transformed into a surfing town. For example, old and dilapidated shops converted into modern surf shops and there are large surf posters on the surrounding buildings. In short, both the surfers and the surf culture are indispensable in Ericeira.

During several visits I have been able to observe, experience and record the influence of the surf culture in Ericeira with my analog camera.
